Performances of Viktor Ullmann's Piano Concerto

February Performances in the USA of Viktor Ullmann's Piano Concerto, op. 25
Victor Ullmann (1898 - 1944), the highly respected Jewish Austro-Hungarian composer, who had studied with Schoenberg and Zemlinsky, was deported in 1942 to Theresienstadt camp and two years later was murdered in the concentration camp Auschwitz. He wrote this piano concerto, a rarely performed work - in 1939, shortly after the Nazis marched into his town Prague. I'm honored to bring this symphonic, colorful, unique piece to life with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra and the Bellingham Symphony under the baton of Maestro Yaniv Attar.

Great review of Piano aux Jacobins recital on Diapason Magazine, France

Diapason Magazine review for my recital at the fantastic International Festival Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse: "The performance of Einav Yarden, rare in France but noted for her recordings, reveals a radically different universe. At the Saint-Pierre-des-Cuisines auditorium, she performs C.P.E. Bach's Rondo and Fantasias with vitality, clarity and style, pages of unbridled inventiveness, full of daring and surprises, in which the shadow of Beethoven is already looming - one sometimes thinks one hears Sonata no. 1 or a concerto cadenza. In J.S. Bach's English Suite no. 2, she displays authority and naturalness in a masterly yet unostentatious manner..." by Bertrand Boissard, 29.9.23

Hailing review of Bach CD on Fanfare Magazine, USA:

"...What I truly love about Yarden’s performances, though, is the way she not only plays the music but inhabits it. The way that she naturally tosses of the abrupt figurations, at first virtuosic and full-bodied, later gentle, even sigh-like—making them feel like real physical gestures, not only musical ones—in C. P. E. Bach’s E♭-Major Fantasia is just delightful. Her playing is palpable..." by Scott Noriega, Fanfare Magazine Nov-Dec issue

Raving reviews of Bach CD on PIANONews magazine, PIANIST Magazine and Stereoplay!

PIANONews, 6/6 points for interpretation:  "...Einav Yarden is completely committed to this incomparably fresh tonal language, and in the juxtaposition with cleverly selected piano works by his father, she interprets these works with ravishing elegance. The pleasure of listening is not interrupted at any point, and one is always inspired to smile, indeed, feels inwardly refreshed after hearing these magnificent works... Her touch is exceptional, and the freedom with which she varies the tempi and allows the pauses so cleverly built in by C.P.E. Bach to break in is fascinating..." by Helmut Peters, PIANONews Magazine, Germany, Sept-Okt 2023 Issue

PIANIST Magazine, 9/10 points: "...Yarden tackles the brisker pieces with great joy of playing and virtuosity, and the ornaments are also are wonderfully brilliantly executed, while she plays the quieter passages and movements with great tonal with great tonal sensitivity...Einav Yarden achieves this exceptionally well. She plays very rhythmically and does not get bogged down in details. Just listen to her interpretation of the original C minor rondo wq. 59/4. Conclusion: An impressive juxtaposition of father and son of father and son, which makes you curious for more." By Mario-Felix Vogt, PIANIST Magazine, Netherlands/Germany, Sept-Okt 2023 Issue

Hailing review on Germany's RONDO Magazine!

Attila Csampai wrote a hailing and beautifully-written review on Rondo Magazine, published on 17.6.23:
"the stylistic break…comes here to light spectacularly… a fantastically prepared new grand piano by Chris Maene for this, whose parallel stringing positively reinforces the radical clarity of her playing, so that one can hear the extreme dynamic and emotional contrasts and the discontinuous course of C. P.E. Bach's music in skin-deep conciseness. In this way, she also succeeds in illuminating in depth the intellectual wit and constant surprises of this music that boldly looks to the future… But Einav Yarden does not spare the father from her unleashed joy of playing: one has seldom heard his second English Suite so fresh, so cheeky, so lively-motoric, and the Chromatic Fantasy has never sounded so freely improvised. With her, Bach the father sounds so alive and current, as if he were among us, as if one could marvel at him live in the "Café Zimmermann". Fantastic new CD reveiew on Germany's Klassik-Heute!

Fantastic review of my Bach CD just published in Germany's "Klassik-Heute", with 'artistic quality' scoring of 9/10 and 'sound quality' scoring of 10/10:
“…The pianist Einav Yarden proves in several respects to be an authoritative interpreter here: on Chris Maene's unique but also relentless grand piano, which due to its tonal purity does not forgive even the slightest technical or musical imbalance, her extraordinary pianistic mastery commands the listener's respect and admiration: The artist thus succeeds in a performance that allows both the father's and the son's music to shine forth, each with its own stringency. The sound engineering, which is absolutely appropriate for the extraordinary performance of the interpreter, further increases the listening pleasure when enjoying this exquisite recording.”  by Detmar Huchting

Great review for live concert at the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper

Great review published at the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper on 10.6.2023, by Mario-Felix Vogt: "...the Israeli showed herself to be a brilliantly skilled pianist with excellent technique and a profound awareness of structures... Einav Yarden succeeds in shaping the abundance of characters into a great whole. The transparency and clarity are just as impressive as the passionate moments of urgency in her playing, which greatly benefits the highly emotional music of C.P.E. Bach.... The second "English Suite" by Bach's father she interpreted spiritedly with a motoric drive that at times reminded a little of Glenn Gould... The Israeli showed it all the more in the late Brahms pieces [Op. 116], which she performed with romantic pathos and high sense of tonal culture, without neglecting the work's architecture. There was justifiably rapturous applause in the well-attended Piano Salon Christophori, and the pianist thanked them with a witty tango from Stravinsky's neoclassical period." https://www.morgenpost.de/kultur/article238363091/klavier-kostbarkeit-johann-sebastian-bach-vater-sohn-christophori-einav-yarden.html

New CD release coming up May 12, 2023 - FATHER AND SON

Very excited that my new CD, FATHER AND SON, will be released on the label Challenge Classics on May 12. The CD combines works by the great J.S. Bach with his brilliant, imaginative and innovative son C.P.E. Bach, which in the course of history got somewhat - and unfairly - neglected and overshadowed by the renown of his father. Wonderful Review for Einav Yarden's Recital at South Windsor Cultural Arts, USA, by Michael Moran

"The sharp-edged clarity of her playing recalled that of her teacher, legendary pianist Leon Fleisher...and her buoyant performance [of the C.P.E Bach Variations] made a powerful showcase for this imaginative score... Both the classical rigor of Bach the father and the emotional force of Bach the son were evident in Yarden’s protean rendition of Johannes Brahms’ 1892 set of seven Fantasies, Op. 116... Yarden displays enormous technical proficiency, unerring interpretive mastery, and a winning stage presence which clearly engaged her capacity audience." By Michael J. Moran, February 2023

Two New Fantastic Reviews from Diapason Magazine and Piano News Magazine!

Einav Yarden's Schumann CD recently received a hailing review on France's most prestigious magazine, 'Diapason'
"...It is difficult to imagine a simpler execution, a more direct one, one that is more in touch with the text.. fluidity and remarkable attention to detail suggest an ideal, made of integrity and idealism. Atmospheres are born, they pass and die in a blinding clarity as much as the articulation, the weight, the balances and the answers from left and right hands become spellbinding... Returning to Fantasie, whose second movement may become a burden if played by less intelligent fingers, Yarden avoids any effect of a heavy march...It should be emphasized that, on the threshold of this admirable and splendidly recorded piece, Fantasiestücke op. 111 sound as strange, enigmatic, fleeting and sombre as they should be." -- Alain Lompech, "Diapason" (France)

And also an enthusiastic review on "Piano News" Magazine:

Jumping in to replace the international star Daniil Trifonov in Bayreuth!!

On monday, 23.7.2018 I was called to replace Daniil Trifonov in a matter of few hours, in a solo recital at the immensely beautiful baroque theater, Markgräfliches Opernhaus (Margravial Opera House) in Bayreuth, Germany. Trifonov, despite being struck by food-poisining, decided to play the first part and I then performed the rest - a beautiful and unforgettable experience to play in this very special hall and an honor to jump in for this remarkable pianist!

Fantastic review on French magazine Télérama

"The highly sensitive playing of the Israeli pianist adapts to the entire palette of moods of the German composer Robert Schumann... remarkable artist... As a final bouquet, the nine miniatures of the scenes of the forest, revive under her fingers with delicacy and an unexpected evocative power."  published July 10, 2018

New Reviews of Schumann CD: "Heavenly!"

"Yarden proves once again being amongst the best pianists around...she ably creates an ambiance of dreamy resignation leading into troubled dismay; a masterly portrayal of opposing elements... engaging soul searching tour..
A deeply moving account, landing her audience in the more peaceful waters of the final movement: a love song, lovingly played."  by Adrian Quanjer, HRAudio

https://www.hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=12978#reviews

"Heavenly!... The expression in her piano playing shows her empathy in Schumann's life and mentality. Her technique and acclaimed piano playing, sometimes powerful and articulate, sometimes soft and intimate poetic, are here (again) wonderfully expressed. For the occasion, discover her recording of Klaviersonaten by Joseph Haydn and her original CD "Oscillations" with music by Beethoven and Stravinsky. Very very beautiful. Highly recommended." by Michel Dutrieue, Stretto Magazine, Belgium

First Review of new Schumann CD - De Volkskrant

“[Einav Yarden’s] new Schumann cd is a gem. Yarden not only paints Schumann’s free spirit very accurately, but also handles the delusions from his later life extremely well. The nine Romantic miniatures of the Waldszenen are played with a lot of character, and the Drei Fantasiestücke opus 111 rise from the piano with passion, coming forth from a strong foundation.”

Guido van Oorschot, de Volkskrant (Netherlands)

New review from recital at Oakmont Concert Series, Santa Rosa, California

New review of solo recital at Oakmont, Santa Rosa, by Terry McNeill:
"The pianist underscored the stylistic diversity and innovation of the opening moderato [Haydn sonata no. 44] and paid careful attention to harmonic nuances, of which there are many in this work [...].
Four of Beethoven’s early and seldom-played Op. 33 Bagatelles opened the recital, and each was a gem. Mr. Yarden’s tempos were ideal, as was careful half-pedaling and in No. 2 spotlighting Beethoven’s sly humor. In the will-of-the-wisp No. 7 she played scales and quick repeated notes impeccably."

Two New Praising Reviews, on Audiophile Audition and French Magazine ARTAMAG'

From the review published on Audiophile Audition:
"A dazzling tour of lesser known, middle-period sonatas...outstanding disc...Ms. Yarden navigates between the fluid improvisatory passages and the famous “witty discourse” of the many clever subjects and their modulations. The latter is communicated most ably with the keenest attention to rhythmic finesse and ornamentation... the playing is stupendous"

Fantastic new review on UK's Gramophone Magazine!

October 2016, article by Harriet Smith

"What an enterprising programme from the Israeli pianist Einav Yarden. She eschews the obvious, choosing six of Haydn’s middle-period sonatas which offer a microcosm of his endlessly varied world and she responds to each with great characterfulness. That is evident from the first sonata here, the F major (No 29), whose first movement satirically juxtaposes the most highly contrasted ideas: Yarden allows the humour to speak for itself, whereas Marc-André Hamelin tends rather to underline the jokes. Her way with the minuet finale, with its dolorous syncopated trio, is also spot-on.

She delights in the physicality of the Allegro of the D major Sonata (No 24), with its repeated-note figuration that simultaneously looks back to Scarlatti and forwards to Beethoven; its operatic D minor slow movement has a beautiful sense of line and she switches effortlessly back to freneticism as the Presto breaks in.

Every sonata seems to spring a surprise... Yarden clearly has much to say in this repertoire and she’s beautifully recorded too."

Haydn CD Selected as CD-des-Doppelmonats on Piano News Magazine, and new praising reviews on Stereoplay Magazine and Haaretz Newspaper

Haydn CD selected as the CD of the Bi-Monthly Issue on Germany's Piano News magazine (Sept-Oct Issue).

New Glorious CD Review on Fono Forum Magazine

From the review by Christoph Vratz on Fono Forum Magazine: "Einav Yarden displays an inventively intelligent Haydn, full of wit and abundance, with a delicate, varying touch... her playing is finely-spirited and artful [...]. Yarden’s style lies in the vicinity of Yevgeny Sudbin, and furthermore within the radius of Brendel and Schiff. She knows how to storm through this music with chic, as in the Presto-Finale of the A-major sonata no. 41, wherein with tiny modulations of tempo she attains great effect, and through the runs her fingers virtually bubble intoxicatingly, before heading to the short, rich concluding chords [...]. Yarden plays a wonderfully exuberant, vibrant Haydn, glowing, transparent, adventurous, at times intimately chamber-music-like, at times grand and orchestral. A voice for Haydn!" -- Christoph Vratz

US Tour New Review

US tour concludes with a great review of collaboration with the Arianna String Quartet in Birmingham's Chamber Music Society from October 31:
"For Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 114, the quartet was joined by the Isareli pianist Einav Yarden, whose chamber music sensibilities fit the quartet’s like a glove. The thick-textured opener vacillated between power and lyricism, the Scherzo by sweeping scales. Yarden clearly led the way in defining the work’s dynamic shifts in the final Allegro, leading the quintet to a brilliant conclusion." (Michael Huebner)

New review for Paris recital published in the important French magazine, 'La Lettre du Musicien'

“…The Sonata in G major by Schubert (D.894) reaps all the benefits. The musician draws unexpected colors from the keyboards, fearlessly allows silence to breathe, and is animated by a living pulse…She has a wide repertoire of motifs, and casts different lights as she brings them to us. The changing narrative, climate and psychology are incrementally encapsulated by the modulations of the text itself, via harmony instead of by resorting to artifice.” by Frédéric Gaussin

Praising review of Schumann CD on Stretto Magazine

"Heavenly!... The expression in her piano playing shows her empathy in Schumann's life and mentality. Her technique and acclaimed piano playing, sometimes powerful and articulate, sometimes soft and intimate poetic, are here (again) wonderfully expressed. For the occasion, discover her recording of Klaviersonaten by Joseph Haydn and her original CD "Oscillations" with music by Beethoven and Stravinsky. Very very beautiful. Highly recommended." by Michel Dutrieue, Stretto Magazine, Belgium
